Behind the lens: A week of very varied photoshoots

Mid-February hasn't traditionally been the busiest period for us photographers, but I've observed a trend since COVID where events — whether they are commercial seminars or industry award functions — can occur at any time of the year. Last week was proof of this; I had four shoots that truly highlighted the variety of events and people we encounter. I've always mentioned that in this job, one moment you could be photographing a pig farmer cleaning their shed, and the next, you're in front of royalty at a glamorous event.

Tuesday, I traveled to London to photograph a business seminar at the Connaught Rooms. Typically, this type of event involves capturing images of guests arriving for the conference, engaging in conversations over coffee, and then the event itself, which usually features guest speakers addressing the audience. The key is to remain discreet and take the necessary shots without becoming part of the proceedings. I usually photograph during the first 2 or 3 minutes of a speech before stepping back, and then perhaps capture a few audience shots. It's all about experience and knowing when you're about to become a nuisance before you actually do. At this event, I met Tom Wagner, the owner of Birmingham City Football Club and the Las Vegas Raiders. I believe he's worth around 1.6 billion, but he was a delightful person to talk to. I jokingly asked if he'd consider buying my beloved West Ham, as he seemed like someone I'd trust to manage things well. It's fascinating to watch a dynamic speaker like him engage with a room; you can see why they are so successful.

On Wednesday I was at a hotel near East Grinstead, where I doubled up as both a photographer and videographer. Providing clients with both services is a handy skill in today's workplace. I incorporated filming into my offerings in recent years, and it's great to learn a new process. After being a stills photographer for 36 years, it's a refreshing change. Many skills remain consistent, such as composition and organisation, but the main differences are in storytelling and, of course, the editing process.

Friday's assignment was a graduation shoot in Epsom. This entails setting up a studio and capturing photos of graduates and their families. It's always a joyous occasion, and I feel a sense of duty to ensure their gown and mortarboard look perfect for a portrait that might be displayed for years. I started doing graduation photography a few years ago, primarily through my other company, 'Portrait Days,' which provides school photography services. What I enjoy about these assignments is collaborating with a team of photographers. The job can often be solitary, so a team day is a refreshing change.

The last job of the week was on Saturday. This was a personal photo session for a couple's 60th wedding anniversary held at The Beacon in Tunbridge Wells. A very different feel to a corporate shoot when you are photographing with personal clients, you're being invited into their family for a time to capture their event. As well as an honour to be able to do that I feel a real responsibility to document the event as best I can. This was a mixture of groups and candid shots in one of the dining rooms at this stunning location.

So there it is that was a week filled with different experiences behind the lens. This week will no doubt throw up some more curve balls along the way. Happy Monday all, catch up soon!
